Resident Evil 6 PC ships with new Mercs mode; Siege mode DLC for consoles in March

The PC version of Resident Evil 6 will include a new mode, sort of. The Mercenaries: No Mercy (unofficial name: "The Naries") is based on the existing Mercenaries mode, but with "more enemies on screen than ever before." Ada Wong's campaign will be available when you start the game, playable in co-op, and you will be able to "fine tune the in-game camera," features that were added to the console versions in updates.

Sometime next month, in advance of the March 22 launch of RE6 for PC, Capcom will release a free benchmark test. We'll warn you: regardless of how well your computer handles it, it's still going to be Resident Evil 6.

In addition to the PC news, Capcom also revealed a March release window for Siege Mode on PS3 and Xbox 360, a $4 add-on for two to six people to play online. One team attempts to kill a rookie (AI-controlled) BSAA agent as monsters, while another team controls the living human characters from RE6 as they try to protect him.

PRESS RELEASE:

We're pleased to confirm that the PC version of Resident Evil 6 will contain a new and exclusive mode as The Mercenaries: No Mercy takes fan favorite The Mercenaries and ramps up the gameplay to 11. More enemies on screen than ever before will provide a greater challenge, but also the opportunity for players to use their skills to rack up even higher combo scores.

Resident Evil 6 PC will be available as a digital download in North America from Friday March 22, 2013, with European PC gamers able to purchase both the digital version and a disc based version from the same date. Both digital and physical versions will include the following features, which were added to the console versions in post-launch title updates: access to Ada Wong's campaign from the outset along with the option to play this campaign with a co-op partner, and the ability to fine tune the in-game camera. As with the console releases, players of the PC version will also be able to take advantage of ResidentEvil.net.

Coming in February, PC owners will be able to check out how the game will run on their machine thanks to a free benchmark test. The digital version of Resident Evil 6 PC will be available in North America for $39.99 and in Europe for €29.99/£19.99.

Owners of Resident Evil 6 will be able to further expand their gameplay experience with the release of a fourth additional mode, Siege. An online multiplayer mode for two to six players, Siege sees a lone AI-controlled rookie BSAA agent in trouble and in need of help. Players will split into two teams with one assuming control of enemy creatures who are trying to take down the rookie, while the other team selects playable characters from the main game and must keep him alive. Each game consists of two rounds with teams switching between the human and enemy roles. The human team wins a round if the BSAA agent survives, while the enemies win if they can defeat him. Siege Mode will be available in March for Xbox 360 and PS3, priced at 320MSP/$3.99/€3.99/£3.19.

It has also been confirmed that Survivors, Predator and Onslaught game add on modes will be available for PlayStation 3 owners this February, with each individually priced at $3.99/€3.99/£3.19.

All four post launch game add on modes – Survivors, Predator, Onslaught and Siege – will be available for PC owners to download and purchase shortly after March 22, with any future title updates for the console version also being made available free of charge for PC owners.

Resident Evil: Revelations on Consoles Looks Better but Still Sounds About the Same

On one hand, this is the first trailer for Resident Evil: Revelations on consoles and PC. That lets you see the game (which released on the 3DS a year ago) as you've never seen it before.

On the other, that means you're seeing something that looks like BioShock, starring Davy Jones' bad guys from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest with some Dead Space thrown in.

It gets here in late May, on Wii U, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Achievements suggest 'Resident Evil: Revelations Unveiled Edition' for 360

Back in November, Korean ratings board GRB posted listings for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Resident Evil: Revelations; a port that Capcom has yet to officially announce in any capacity. Now, purported achievements for the 360 version have surfaced, listing the game's full title as Resident Evil: Revelations Unveiled Edition.

The achievements themselves reveal little, beyond the fact that both Campaign and Raid modes will make the jump from handheld to console, should this all shake out. As intrigued as we are, the idea of a 3DS to console port brings up many questions, though the fact that the word "revelations" is spelled correctly is promising. We've reached out to Capcom for comment.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, Street Fighter X Tekken are now Games on Demand

Xbox 360 users will find two new games available under the Games on Demand section of Xbox Live. Capcom has announced Slant Six's shooter Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is available for download on Xbox Live alongside cross-over fighter Street Fighter X Tekken. Each will set you back $39.99 in the United States.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City wasn't in the best shape when we reviewed it, but a patch issued back in June may have alleviated some of our issues. And as far as Street Fighter X Tekken goes, that thing's been patched up, down and sideways, and Capcom is promising a "hefty update" later on this year. There's also a new mobile version of Street Fighter X Tekken on iOS now, if you're more for fighting on the bus, train or – well, everywhere we guess since you won't stop staring at your iPhone.

What characters will appear in Resident Evil 6?

For the first time in Resident Evil history, Leon S. Kennedy (Resident Evil 4) and Chris Redfield (Resident Evil 5) will both be playable Characters. Both Chris Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy will have new characters as partners. Ada Wong will also be a playable character.

Confirmed Characters Returning Characters New Characters
  • Chris Redfield Piers Nivans
  • Leon S. Kennedy Helena Harper
  • Sherry Birkin Jake Muller
  • Ada Wong Carla Radames
  • Ingrid Hunnigan Derek C. Simmons

Chris and Leon will have separate stories in the game that will eventually overlap in some capacity. Chris Redfield's story takes place in China, while Leon will be in Washington DC and Tall Oaks University.

The third main storyline concerns Jake Muller who was revealed in the debut trailer. It was implied in the Captivate Trailer he is the son of Albert Wesker.

A forth Campaign was announced to be unlocked after completing the first three. Ada Wong will be unlocked after playing as Chris, Leon, and Jake.

Ada Wong will have a playable role in the game, though not immediately -- the Ada storyline will become available to players after the Chris and Leon arcs have been completed (probably similar to the 'Assignment Ada' bonus mission in Resident Evil 4), plus a third primary narrative featuring Jake Mueller. Any of the three main story branches will be selectable early on in the game, allowing players to see each storyline through to completion before starting another one.

Where will Resident Evil 6 be set?

Resident Evil 6 is set to take place across the globe, as it follows the paths of three pairs of characters.
Lanshiang, China - Lanshiang is where most of the game will take place and where key characters in the story will meet eachother.

A Scene Set in China with Chris Redfield
Tall Oaks - Much of the debut trailer focuses on Tall Oaks, a city which is 90% infected by a virus similar to that found in Raccoon City. Leon and Helena's portion of the game will take place in Tall Oaks University.

Edonia - an Eastern European state that was involved in a bio-terrorist attack in the 21st century involving C Virus-infected mercenaries, who had supported anti-government militias before their infection. The city was turned into a full-on war-zone as the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance was called in to end the crisis. It is assumed that this is where Chris Redfield suffers his "trauma". It should also be noted that Jake Muller's arc takes part around the area, however not at the same time as Chris Redfield's which occurred six months ago present to Leon and Jake's arcs.

Who is Developing Resident Evil 6?

The RE6 development team is the "same internal Japanese team that has worked on previous entries."  The game will be produced by Hiroyuki Kobayashi, who previously produced Resident Evil 4 and by Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, who worked as a motion capture engineer for the remake of Resident Evil and as a Scenario writer in the Script department for Resident Evil 5.Some old fans of the series will also be happy to know that, Eiichiro Sasaki who was the director of outbreak file 2 has returned to helm the same role.

Following the announcement trailer for Resident Evil 6, it was also revealed that Akihito Narita, who had previously assisted on numerous projects such as Resident Evil 5, Devil May Cry 4 and Monster Hunter Freedom will be the lead music composer for the title, marking it as the first major project on his resume.

What will Resident Evil's plot be?

According to Capcom, the game's story is as follows:The President of the United States has decided to reveal the truth behind what took place in the belief that it will curb the current resurgence in bioterrorist activity. Due to be by the President's side is his personal friend and Raccoon City survivor, Leon S. Kennedy, but when the venue suffers a bioterrorist attack, Leon is forced to face a President transformed beyond recognition and make his hardest decision ever.

At the same time, Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance member Chris Redfield arrives in China, itself under threat of a bioterrorist attack. With no country safe from these attacks and the ensuing outbreaks, the entire world's population is united by a common fear that there is no hope left."  The game takes place in 2013. 15 years after the original game. Chris is described as dealing with a personal "trauma."

What will Resident Evil 6's gameplay be like?

The RE fanbase has been split into two camps since RE4 overhauled the gameplay from survival horror (limited ammo, fewer enemies and bigger scares) to a more action oriented experience (bigger guns and hordes of enemies). They said they were listening more to feedback from fans this time, and they seemed intent on pleasing both groups.

However this game seems to be a continuation of the over the shoulder, action oriented gameplay of the previous two entries, and there seems to be some cool martial arts moves for more up-close combat.

Players can come now move while shooting, take cover, and quick dodge from enemies. Dual weapons and melee weapons will strongly influence gameplay.

Does this mean survival horror is out of the question? Not necessarily, the one remaining hope for survival horror fans is the return of zombies, and they appear to be the traditional slow type zombies (Romero's Night of the Living Dead) and not the recently trendy ninja zombies (28 Days Later). The return of traditional zombies means the gameplay may, at least at times, slow down and return to the true survival horror nature that made the original games so appealing.

But again, the action heavy preview seems to heavily lean towards the action crowd, so it remains to be seen if Capcom will shun the survival horror crown again or try to appease both groups as they indicated earlier this year.

Will Resident Evil 6 have Mercenaries Mode?

Yes, Capcom has confirmed that Mercenaries mode, seen in previous Resident Evil games, will make a return in RE6. Unlike past games, this mode will be available from the start and won't need to be unlocked. Additional multiplayer options, including new co-op mechanics, are also set to be announced in the future.

Will there be multiplayer or co-op modes?

Yes, Resident Evil 6 will feature two-person co-op gameplay that is similar to that in Resident Evil 5. Players can play splitscreen locally or online. However, in Resident Evil 6, players can freely join or leave a game, in what is commonly known as "drop-in, drop-out" co-op.

Will there be zombies?

In an interview with IGN, Yoshiaki Hirabayashi stated unequivocally that traditional zombies would return in Resident Evil 6.

"We know that the fans out there love zombies, and we do as well. With RE6 we are happy to announce that zombies will make a return to the series after a long time away.

The zombies are different from previous installments. While they look like everyone's favorite zombies, they are not infected by the T-virus. They are also more aggressive, sustain heavy damage, and can mutate damaged body parts.

What are the pre-order bonuses and special editions?

Resident Evil 6 will receive pre-order bonuses at GameStop, Best Buy and Amazon. According to Capcom, each retailer "will each get an exclusive map that will function with various modes in the game."

Platinum Edition

The Resident Evil 6 Platinum Edition comes with a copy of the game on either Xbox 360 or PlayStation, plus four phone cases – one each for Chris, Leon and Jake, plus a random 'secret' case.

The big draw, however, is a replica leather jacket based on the one Leon wears in the game. Available in four sizes – small to extra large – the jacket is apparently made from fine soft leather.

The Platinum Edition costs ¥100,000, which translates to around $1,240 or £780. It is currently only available through Capcom's Japanese eStore and is limited to 5,000 units.

Pre-order Bonus Details

Pre-ordering Resident Evil 6 at Amazon, Best Buy, or GameStop will grant a unique Mercenaries mode map.
GameStop customers receive The Catacombs, which features "booby traps ready to ensnare you around every corner."

Amazon customers receive High Seas Fortress, which is a giant aircraft carrier.
Best Buy offers its customers the Rail Yard map, which takes place in the subway at Tall Oaks.
